In a significant development, Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI). His appointment comes after the current CJI, D Y Chandrachud, recommended his name to the Union Law Ministry. Justice Khanna, who is the second-most senior judge of the Supreme Court, will take over the role and serve a six-month term until his retirement on May 13, 2025.

Justice Khanna's legal journey began in 1983 when he enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi. He initially practiced at Tis Hazari district courts before moving to the Delhi High Court and various tribunals. His commitment to the law led to his elevation as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005, and just a year later, he became a permanent judge.

His rise to the Supreme Court in 2019 was notable, especially as he was elevated despite not having served as Chief Justice of a High Court, bypassing some senior judges. Justice Khanna has since been part of several landmark rulings that have cemented his position as a highly respected jurist.

Among his key contributions, Justice Khanna was part of the Constitution Bench that declared the Electoral Bond Scheme unconstitutional. He also played a pivotal role in upholding the abrogation of Article 370 and ruled that the Supreme Court could grant direct divorces under Article 142 in cases of "irretrievable breakdown of marriage."

Justice Khanna’s dedication and legal expertise make him a deserving choice as the next CJI, ensuring continuity in the leadership of India's judiciary.
